Richard Wilding

K2 Network Attorney

Chartered Patent Attorney
European Patent Attorney

MEng Chemical Engineering, University of Nottingham

Richard is a Chartered UK Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney, a member of the Institute of Linguists and fluent German speaker. He has over twenty five years’ experience in intellectual property (IP), both at the European Patent Office (EPO) in Munich, Germany, and as an in-house attorney supporting diverse businesses, especially in the chemical, consumer product, healthcare and medical device fields.

Richard has extensive experience of the IP lifecycle, the commercial exploitation of IP and of the provision of commercially-focused IP advice to clients. He is experienced in IP strategy/portfolio management, in drafting, filing and actively managing IP and in maximising the impact and reach of IP in a cost-constrained environment. He also has wide experience of strategically enforcing IP rights, and assisting businesses in making decisions as to whether to license or litigate.

An important aspect of Richard’s previous roles was to identify risk, via multi-country freedom-to-operate (FTO) assessments, and manage FTO risk by means of appropriate strategies including advising on design around options, negotiating licences/covenants and filing oppositions/invalidity actions.

Career history

Richard has an MEng degree in chemical engineering from the University of Nottingham. After studying German in Berlin during the heady days at the end of 1989, Richard spent eight years working at the EPO in Munich, Germany, in the field of chemical/environmental engineering. During his time as an examiner, Richard gained extensive experience of the EPO’s opposition process.

Richard then worked as an in-house patent attorney for the next fourteen years, initially at Smith & Nephew, a healthcare and medical device manufacturer in York, UK, then with the consumer-products company, Procter & Gamble (P&G), in London, latterly as head of P&G’s London IP department. Further to providing/managing others to provide the full range of IP services in his role at P&G, Richard lobbied for P&G on IP matters via the UK’s IP Federation, and for the CBI/Business Europe as a member of the Strategic Advisory Committee of the European Patent Office (SACEPO).

Richard has now been with K2 for five years. In this role at K2, Richard has specialised in providing interim in-house support. Richard can offer flexible support packages to fill capability gaps, virtually, on site or via a mixture of the two. He can provide this alone or supplemented by other K2 and Keltie colleagues, always backed up by Keltie’s world class back office team.
