Donal O’Connell

Donal is an experienced IP consultant specialising in the areas of innovation and intellectual property management. During a long career in the electronics and wireless telecoms industry he developed extensive expertise of technical and R & D management and successful IP and innovation management in industry.

His work with clients helps them to appreciate their intellectual capital, assets and property, and to ensure that they then manage these intangibles in an efficient and effective manner.

These clients include Multi-Nationals, SMEs, Legal & IP Firms, Financial Services entities as well as Universities and research-based organisations.

Career history

Donal graduated from NIHE Limerick (now The University of Limerick) in Ireland in with a Degree in Electronic Engineering.

This was followed by a successful career in the electronics and wireless telecoms industry, working for periods in The Netherlands, UK, USA, Finland, and Hong Kong. This included work with Philips and Nokia in a range of technical and managerial positions including Vice President of R&D, and then Director of IP at Nokia.

In the US, Donal led and managed the Nokia R&D centre in Texas from 1997 to 2003, growing the site from scratch by recruiting and developing more than 600 engineers during that time period and designing, developing and launching numerous successful products to the market-place.  In parallel to his R&D responsibilities in Texas, Donal was Environmental Manager for Nokia in the Americas from 2001 to 2003. He was a member of Nokia's American Management Board while based in Texas.

He is an Adjunct Professor at Imperial College Business School in London, and teaches about 'IP management'. His first book “Inside the Patent Factory” was published by Wiley & Sons in 2008 and a second book “Harvesting External Innovation” was published by Gower Publishing in mid 2011. He has also written a large number of papers on various aspects of innovation and IP which have been published in a number of magazines, web sites and blogs around the world.

Since 2013, he has been included into the IAM 300 (the world's leading IP Strategists) an annual listing of those individuals identified as offering operating companies and other IP owners world-class advice on maximising the value of their intellectual property.

Donal is also involved with a number of innovative and creative start-up companies, for example Industry Advisor at Brandstrike, an on-line brand protection services and technology company and Chairman at Deltasight, a big data company 'joining the dots between business, technology, people and IP data.

Together with some associates, he is also a coach and mentor to a number of start-up companies on innovation and entrepreneurship.

Donal is also founder of Chawton Innovation Services which provides a range of IP consulting services and also offers a suite of intellectual property software solutions for SMEs, Law Firms & IP Firms. Donal joined K2 in 2015.
