Nick is a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney with a GRSC and a Phd in the Chemistry field from The Manchester Metropolitan University. He has over 20 years’ experience working both in-house and in private practice. He places great emphasis on taking a commercial approach to IP management and for providing ‘real world’ advice to business. He has extensive experience in the chemicals, material science, nanotechnology and mechanical fields handling work for SMEs, international companies, Universities, start-ups and investors in a wide range of industries.

In addition to patent drafting and portfolio management Nick is actively involved in the devising and implementation of IP strategy, operational and transactional IP due diligence, IP mentoring, competitor IP assessments, pre-investment assessment, IP audits and has extensive experience and expertise in EPO Opposition and Appeals. He is also involved in a range of IP consultancy projects including providing advice on patent management and procurement services and providing CIPO (Chief Intellectual Property Officer) services.

During his career in intellectual property Nick has worked for a number of firms of patent attorneys and IP consultancies at the most senior levels, Nick has worked for three corporate IP departments, largely in the chemical and materials field. Through this he has extensive experience in catalysis, petrochemicals and refining technologies; aluminium technologies, packaging technology, metal matrix composites, sol gel science and aluminium ceramic composites ; new coating chemistries and formulations for printing, including various ink and printing technologies, UV and electron-beam curable ink systems, the formulation of new inks, photo imaging technologies, printed electronics and OLEDS.

Career history

Nick started his career as a scientist with a number of chemical companies including in ICI Mond Division, Coates Brothers PLC and Howson-Algraphy part of Vickers PLC, where he attained management responsibility for research programmes and was an inventor. During this period of his career Nick spent time as a visiting lecturer on the MSc course in Polymer Sciences at Lancaster University providing a series of lectures on the application of polymers in printing processes.

Nick changed career moving away from R&D management and into the field of intellectual property He worked as an IP management and licensing manager with Alcan International, then training as a patent attorney with AEA Technology before moving to ExxonMobil, where he completed his IP training and qualified as an attorney. With ExxonMobil Nick had responsibility for providing patent services and strategic IP advice to a number of business units of Exxon Chemicals with lead international IP service provider for three business teams across three Exxon Chemical sites.

Nick moved from industry into the private practice at partner level with a number of leading firms and was previously International Head of Patents for an international IP consultancy business with responsibility for managing and delivery of all patent attorney related services across all offices and direct management of offices in the UK and Munich, Germany.

Nick has a passion for innovation and new company formation and has been active in mentoring and lecturing with various initiatives to assist start-ups and new ventures.

When not thinking about IP Nick enjoys the Yorkshire countryside, family life and the odd historical novel.
