Emily's experience includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications, EPO oppositions and appeals, validity and freedom-to-operate opinions of patents and designs, due diligence projects, day-to-day management of global portfolios and strategic IP advice on contentious and non-contentious issues. Emily works in a wide range of technological fields including the building industry, food and beverage technology, the packaging industry, the renewable energy sector (including wave, wind and solar energy technologies), automotive engineering, and metal and alloy production.

She works frequently with in-house IP teams, supporting them with invention harvesting, original drafting work, freedom-to-operate projects and internal IP education projects.

She also advises on design rights, and has particular experience of global freedom-to-operate projects and strategic advice regarding infringement and enforcement of registered and unregistered design rights in sectors including the fashion and jewellery industry.

Emily regularly blogs about UK and European patent and design law, and particularly about issues relating to the Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court on the IPCopy blog. She has been awarded two prizes by the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys for her performance in the UK patent foundation examinations: the Moss prize for achieving the highest combined marks in the UK and Overseas Patent Law exams in 2012, and the Mike Higgins Prize for achieving the highest marks in the UK Design and Copyright Law exam in 2013. In her European Qualifying Examinations in 2014 she achieved the joint-highest aggregate mark in Europe.

Career history

Emily graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2007 with a degree in natural sciences, studying chemistry and physics before specialising in the field of Materials Science. She remained at the University of Cambridge to undertake graduate research in the Device Materials group of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, where her PhD research focused on oxide nanocomposites for magnetic and electronic devices. During this time she also taught undergraduate and postgraduate students in many areas of materials science including glasses and amorphous materials, electronic devices, liquid crystals, biomedical materials, characterisation techniques, crystallography and fracture mechanics.

Emily joined Keltie in 2011 and qualified as a UK and European Patent and Design attorney in 2015. She has worked as part of the K2 Network since 2014, collaborating with K2 Network attorneys to support K2 clients.
