Peter specialises in patents and has significant experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications for mechanical, electrical and computer-related inventions. He has particular expertise in renewable technologies such as wind turbines and wave energy converters, and in automotive technologies such as fuel injectors, engine control systems and engine diagnostic systems. Peter also has a strong academic background in mathematical physics, solid state physics, nanotechnology, spectroscopy, optics and lasers.

Peter works predominantly with direct clients and advises on infringement and validity issues and frequently conducts freedom-to-operate investigations. Peter has extensive experience of EPO opposition and appeal proceedings and regularly attends oral proceedings in Munich and the Hague with a highly successful track record of winning cases for his clients.

Peter also manages patent portfolios and coordinates large-scale international patent filing programmes. In addition to his knowledge of UK and European Patent Law, Peter has considerable experience of patent prosecution in other countries, including the USA, Japan, India and China.

Aside from patents, Peter is a European Design Attorney with significant experience of filing UK and EU Registered Design Applications. He regularly advises clients on all aspects of registered and unregistered design rights.

Career history

Peter joined Keltie in 2006 after training for three years at another firm of patent attorneys. In 2008, Peter qualified as a UK and European Patent Attorney, having previously obtained a certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary, University of London, in 2003. He became a Partner in 2016.

Before entering the patent profession, Peter graduated from the University of Nottingham with a first class degree in Chemistry and Molecular Physics. As an undergraduate, Peter was awarded the F. Stanley Kipping award in consecutive years for his performance in examinations. He was also awarded the University Exhibition Prize for outstanding academic results, having graduated first in his year.
