Stephen is a European Patent Attorney and Chartered UK Patent Attorney with over 20 years’ experience and works closely with his clients to help them develop and implement their IP strategies, with a focus on patents and registered designs. Stephen especially enjoys working with ambitious SME’s, helping them understand the role IP plays in supporting the success of their growing business. He has worked across a variety of technical fields and has particular experience in medical devices, automotive/transport, outdoor and sports equipment, and software.

Stephen’s work covers the full patent lifecycle, from drafting patent specifications, through prosecuting applications at the European Patent Office and UK IPO and management of international portfolios, to oppositions, appeals and advice in relation to disputes. His wider practice also encompasses IP due diligence and opinion work, as well as advice in relation to design protection strategies.

Stephen is recommended in the 2017 edition of The Legal 500, described as “good on the details”, and in the Managing Intellectual Property: IP Stars 2017, where a client commented that he provides “deeply considered analysis of the law and has been named in the edition of WIPR Leaders, a guide to the leading IP practioners from around the world. 

Career history

Following his studies at the University of Bath, where he gained a first-class honours degree and MPhil in mechanical engineering, in 1994 Stephen joined and trained with a well-regarded UK firm of patent attorneys. He qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 1998. From 2000-2004 Stephen worked for a large general practice law firm, gaining experience in supporting the IP aspects of corporate transactions and IP litigation.

In 2004 Stephen re-joined his first firm as a partner, a position he held until joining K2 in 2018.
