K2 Network Attorney

Chartered Patent Attorney
European Patent Attorney

BSc in Physics and Philosophy, University of Bristol

Adam is a Chartered UK Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney. With a BSc in Physics and Philosophy from the University of Bristol he specialises in electronics, telecommunications, imaging, physics and software-related inventions. He has experience of handling IP for various sizes of companies, from small with heavily limited IP budgets to management of large IP portfolios for international businesses.

Clients have varied widely, from high-tech companies to low-budget engineering businesses.  He works with K2’s growing client base in the aerospace and space sectors, and in particular with: clients requiring early stage advisory work; and more mature client businesses seeking to improve their generation, protection and exploitation of IP.  He has spoken on IP strategy at various industry events.

He has worked with a very wide range of subject matter. While latterly this has involved a focus on aerospace and space technology, particularly on satellite applications, his experience includes engineering (industrial machines and energy generation, electronic components and systems, operational schemes and software for medical scanners), a broad range of electronics such as telecommunications, nanotechnology, fibre optics, digital image capture and image processing, and with a large multinational electronics company included semiconductor technology, magnetic recording media,  plasma and LCD displays, digital signal and image processing, optical recording devices, and printing technologies.

His work includes drafting patent specifications and prosecution before the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO), managing worldwide prosecution, providing infringement opinions, and EPO examination and opposition hearings. He also has a particular interest in IP advisory and consultancy work, with experience in licensing IP.

Career history

Following his degree course Adam obtained a Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary College, London and then trained as a patent attorney working in a number of well established private practice firms in London.  He subsequently joined the corporate IP department of  Siemens PLC with responsibility for IP for a range of the company’s business units both in the UK and overseas, before joining K2 in 2012.

He has also been involved in providing input to IP policy development at National and European level as a member of the UK IPO Research Expert Advisory Groups and the CBI's IP Committee, participating in discussions with the UK IPO on Unitary Patent negotiations and with the Department of Energy & Climate Change and the UK IPO on IP negotiations at the 2009 UN Climate Change Conference.

A keen traveller, he took a career break in 2003 to undertake a round-the-world trip to Asia, Australia, New Zealand and South America.  He is a musician, playing piano, saxophone and guitar, and also a proponent and sometime player of Ultimate Frisbee, whose team placed 9th at the 2006 World Club Championships.
