Rob Carter

Rob is an IP consultant with significant international experience in the creation, management and exploitation of IP assets, including through industry and academic collaborations, joint ventures, technology licensing, brand licensing and numerous M&A transactions. He has particular experience of the oil & gas, petrochemical, speciality chemicals, fuel cells, solar energy and telecoms industries.

Within the K2 IP network his specialisations are  IP due diligence and IP commercialisation. This includes undertaking pre-purchase IP due diligence for purchasers and investors, carrying out pre-sale review and associated preparatory work for IP owners, advising on suitable ownership structures for IP assets, and undertaking a range of IP marketing and commercialisation activities. As an IP Management Consultant he will advise on IP department structure and organisation, internal communication, workflow management, training and the development of electronic databases of standard documentation.

Career history

A trained lawyer with a degree in Chemical Sciences from the University of Leeds, Rob originally started his working life with the UK civil service, with periods spent as a scientific specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Food, (‘MAFF’) , Health & Safety Executive and the DTI, before joining the IP legal team of BT plc as a licensing specialist. He subsequently worked in Shell's intellectual property legal team for over 25 years, the last 10 years as Associate General Counsel and as part of the Global IP leadership team. Since leaving Shell, Rob has set up Inter Partes Limited to offer consultancy in the areas of IP strategy, IP management, the IP aspects of mergers, acquisitions and divestments, and the creation and exploitation of all types of IP assets. He joined K2 IP in April 2014.

Outside work he volunteers to do canal restoration work with the Waterways Recovery Group and practical conservation work with the Herts Countryside Management Service. He also enjoys running, narrow boating, kayaking and DIY projects.
